OLG introduces the Student Learning Expectations to the school community at the beginning of each school year and students continually work toward these goals. The SLEs were adapted in the 2016-17 school year to be rooted in the four Dominican pillars of Prayer, Study, Community and Ministry. Our intention is to teach our students how to pray, to embrace their local and global communities, to exhibit gospel values, to commit to study, and to go about serving others through their daily learning experiences. The SLEs focus on the spiritual and intellectual growth of our children and the importance of serving God as they come to the assistance of others. The SLEs are woven into the fabric of everyday life and as such, we have opportunities to witness the students living them out daily and they are acknowledged by means of the Christian Value Awards (CVAs) monthly. CVA recipients are announced in the school’s bulletin.
Our Lady of Guadalupe School follows the curriculum standards set by the Diocese of Oakland and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in math and language arts. Teachers create unit plans based on these standards, and they use multiple assessments to measure acceptable progress toward achievement of curriculum standards. Teachers are required to create and follow detailed, weekly lesson plans that identify very specific curriculum standards. These lesson plans also explicitly reference which SLEs and standard is being taught in a particular lesson, as well as the type of assessment used to determine student comprehension and achievement. These lessons are reviewed by the administration on a regular basis, ensuring that OLG School is teaching the standards and meeting its goals.
